Me on The Blog

- or -

Everybody has a Blog so why shouldn't I. (Because I'm a lazy bastard, that's why).

- or -

I have insights, please find me witty.

If everything goes to plan, this will be a place where I'll post, I hope interesting, insights on diverse subjects but mostly Sci-Fi related stuff. Books, movies, games, anything I can get my hands on and I find particularly good or bad will find its place here. But as they say, best laid plans and so on. I really am the laziest person I know, so even if I like the idea of posting here regularly, I don't have that much confidence in myself to promise anything.

Now that I've caught your attention with my enthralling apathy, let me just list some of my favourite authors so you can see if we are on the same page (if you like it, the pun is intended) or if we'll be quarrelling on what is the really good SF nowadays.

Disclaimer: They are not listed in any rational order, they are listed as they come to my mind.

So, here goes:

Iain (M.) Banks - it started with Player of games, when i finished it I actually couldn't say if I liked it or not, when I re-read the book I understood that I was just shocked by how good it was. Player of games has since been surpassed by Consider Phlebas, Look to windward and Use of weapons in my favors. You've got to love the Culture. I often go to this wikipedia entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ships_(The_Culture) just to refresh on all those silly names.

Neal Asher - he got me hooked with The Skinner, still my favourite novel of his, and I had to read everything I could find. He has created an awesome universe with the Polity, the greatest feat of which, in my opinion, is all the diverse ecosystems he managed to come up with. This said, I'd love to visit the Polity, but I'd rather live in the Culture (Lazy, remember?).

Neal Stephenson - Snow Crash was, until recently, my favourite novel, not that it isn't anymore, but it has to compete with a lot of good books I've read since I first picked it up all those years ago. It surely is the novel I have re-read most times (followed, probably, by the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy's Trilogy in five parts) I've since gone through three different editions but the first 20 pages still give me the shivers each time I browse them. I love the sheer complexity of Cryptonomicon and Anathem, I'm astounded by the fact that someone can cram so many notions in one single novel. Ok, they're not that short but he manages to make those 800/1000 pages just fly by.

Enough for now. There clearly are a lot more, but it doesn't feel right just to list some names after I've drooled on these three, so I'll come back in the next posts to continue the list of authors on my SF olympos (damn, I've got to remember Dan Simmons).

I hope this experiment of mine will fare well, I will trust myself when I see that I've posted with some kind of regularity for 3 or 4 times, at that point I will start a viral marketing campain that will bring my blog to the attention of all the people of the world, also yours.
So, until next time, cheers.

P.S.: At last, just one little request. If anyone aver reads this blog, please be aware that English is not my mothertongue, but I really like this language so help me improve it by pointing out spelling or grammar mistakes I may make. Thank you.
